Schneider Senator:
Jubilee for a proven concept.

The 10th anniversary of S-Line H - fully hydraulic, direct-driven high-speed cutters

Buchholz. At 1995 DRUPA, Schneider Senator surprised the experts with the presentation of the fully-hydraulically driven high-speed cutter S-Line H.

The 10th anniversary of this - until to date - unique drive concept is being celebrated in 2005. "And the success in the market had proven our concept", comments Mr. Hans-Eckart Joost, Managing Director of Senator Technology the anniversary, "After initial scepticism the hydraulic machine found its place where quality and reliability are especially in demand. For instance the most part of EURO banknotes are being cut on cutting systems make Schneider Senator.

The differences between the various drive concepts are clear. Apart from the usual hydraulic clamping, the conventional, electro-mechanical cutting machines are equipped with a gearbox, crank drive and knife draw rod with overload protection by means of shear pins or clutches. These susceptible wearing parts are completely removed from the direct hydraulically-driven cutting machines. Therefore, also for the cutting procedure, i.e. the movement of the knife carrier, the wear free hydraulic is applied. This technology provides a lot of advantages for the operator. Highest precision is guaranteed by the two precision linear guides at the knife carrier. The cut itself is carried out at an absolutely constant speed and minimal deflection of the knife. A measurable higher serviceable life of the knife is a very often noticed result.

After 10 years of its presentation, the Senator S-Line H still sets a good standard at wear time and costs as well as in regards to safety. A possible overload, for instance caused by a blunt knife in combination with big cutting heights, is compensated by a wear free overload valve – thus preventing a breakage of costly shear bolts or other damages to the machine drive. Also the reaction of the knife when interrupting the cutting process is unique: The knife carrier with knife immediately returns to the upper dead and the machine is ready for the next cut. Contrary to the conventional machines where the knife just stops. Then first of all, the cut material has to be removed manually under the dangerously exposed knife blade to move the knife to the lower dead point in order to finish the cutting cycle.

The patented knife change at the direct hydraulically driven machine not only is carried out on the highest safety level, but is also extremely quick. The operators commend the execution as very comfortable, safe and easy. The knife change at the S-Line H is completely carried out from the front, the hydraulic automatically transports the knife into a change cassette. In this cassette the knife is taken out and inserted again without any danger of injury by the blade.

An enormous time advantage versus conventional knife change procedures is the automatic fine adjustment of the knife to cut the bottom sheet without any intervention of the operator. A re-adjustment can be carried out comfortably from the front of the operating side. The difficult height correction of the knife carrier by means of knife draw rod adjustment at some machine types are totally eliminatedat the S-Line H.

The owners of a Senator S-Line H also noticed during daily work that the operating expenses are clearly reduced compared to the conventional cutting machines. The lubrication intervals only twice a year and omission of appprox. 30 % wearing parts contribute to minimize the downtime.

Since Drupa 2004, Senator Technology offers the hydraulic cutting machines S-Line H with three different computer controls. The top of the line "CT" Colour Touch amongst others includes an easy to operate Touchscreen, a programmable pressure adjustment via display, a cut optimizer, a fault diagnosis and, optionally, an external automatic programming by using CIP 3 / 4 pre-press data.

The very positive experiences gained with the direct hydraulically drive made the decision easier for Schneider Senator to exclusively rely on this drive technique. Through the concentration upon a technical concept, the economy of scales achieved by the manufacturers can be passed on to the customers.

"Our type S-Line H is technically superior and pricewise a more than competitive machine. I am convinced that other manufacturers soon will follow and offer a hydraulic drive. Then our 10 years of experience with this concept will bear fruits", states the managing director Mr. Hans Joost confident.
