A special jubilee at
Elbe-Werkstätten in Hamburg

A visit paid to the Elbe-Werkstätten in the Behringstreet in Hamburg-Altona. The Elbe-Werkstätten employ disabled people at six locations in Hamburg. The target is the rehabilitation by job-related education or a regular employment. The reality in these modern workshops by far exceeds just simple manual activities. Disabled people build furniture, print books, they are market leader in the production of skirts, they engage in the electro-recycling sector and look after the rehabilitation tools being used again.

They started in the printing field with three persons and a blue print shop: One team leader, one civilian alternative service worker and an employee of Elbe-Werkstätten executed print works for the first time in 1993. Today the company in Hamburg-Altona is a competence centre around print and processing, with own offset- and digital print and bookbindery. The bookbinding field rapidly developed since 2000 when the yearly volume was 1000 to 1500 books. "We estimate to surpass the level of 120.000 by the end of the year," states team leader Mr. Ulf Lübben-Lorenz.

And here Schneider Senator comes into play, because the Elbe-Werkstätten are no new customers for Schneider Senator. Already in 2001, the Elbe-Werkstätten purchased a Senator E-Line 78 and in 2005, the second Schneider Senator was installed. "As we are very satisfied with these machines, the next machine should also be a Schneider Senator", Mr. Ulf Lübben-Lorenz proudly says about the new acquisition. "Furthermore, the machines are very low-noised as the motor is only working in cutting mode. And that is very comfortable at work. A further positive side effect is shown on our electricity bill, which, fortunately, is quite low."

There is another reason for today's celebration. With this acquisition, the Elbe-Werkstätten - unknowingly - acquired the 500. Senator E-Line of the new type series. At Schneider Senator, the prevailing E-Line 78 model advanced to a bestseller. The market rapidly accepted the machine with the direct drive concept. The combination of a compact-type construction, easy operation, low-current drive and highest reliability provoke a production quantity of this machine per year which is more than twice as much than of the previous model.

This round lot initiated Senator Technology to pay a visit to see the machine in its new work environment. The main focus of the "jubilee Senator" and its colleagues is cutting books for "Books-on-demand". Further print products are besides layout drawings, also business cards and business papers, instruction material or forms for the Hamburg authorities . The biggest customer BOD (Books-on-demand GmbH), with whom everything started, is located in Norderstedt.

They are particularly proud of their own offset and digital print at Elbe-Werkstätten, where the "Primetime" edition of the Süddeutsche Zeitung is produced by physically and mentally challenged people assisted by pedagogically qualified persons, referees and industrial employees. "At the beginning, we had the hope to make staff members fit for the job market. Instead we provide new jobs ourselves", says Mr. Ulf Lübben-Lorenz.
